About CityMatCH

A national organization of urban maternal and child health leaders working to strengthen public health and promote comprehensive community health care.

Our Mission

CityMatCH is a national membership organization of city and county health departments' maternal and child health (MCH) programs and leaders representing urban communities in the United States.

Our mission is to provide training, technical support, and collaboration opportunities for local government health departments across the country to:

  • Advance the use of evidence-based, scientific approaches for improving maternal and child outcomes, including prevention of conditions that result in costly health care, such as preterm birth, asthma, and infectious diseases.
  • Strengthen relationships among local and state health departments, other government agencies, private sector organizations, and the people they serve, to increase the capacity of communities to address both current and emerging health needs.
  • Increase the effective use of existing surveillance systems for detecting problems as they occur, leveraging stories and qualitative data, implementing appropriate solutions, and monitoring improvements in states, cities, neighborhoods, and at-risk populations, as policies and programs change.

We Work Together To:

  • Tackle pressing MCH challenges
  • Grow skills and knowledge of MCH professionals
  • Promote optimal health outcomes for all in urban communities
  • Strengthen public health leadership

Our History

CityMatCH was initiated in 1988 as a special project of the Boston Department of Health and Hospitals with the goal of improving the organization and delivery of services to urban families and children.

Initial project activities centered on developing an information base on what major health departments across the United States were doing to address shared urban MCH problems such as growing infant mortality, inadequate access to prenatal care, substance abuse in pregnancy, and interpersonal violence.

The CityMatCH project evolved into a national organization in 1991 under the leadership of urban MCH program directors in cities across the country. CityMatCH has been strategically positioned at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for over 30 years, operating as the Division of Child Health Policy within the Department of Pediatrics at UNMC.

Today, CityMatCH continues to serve as a vital resource for urban health departments, providing leadership, innovation, and support to improve maternal and child health outcomes through community-based approaches.
